Community Invited to Take Steps for Safety and Help End Human Trafficking

Simcoe Muskoka Family Connexions (SMFC) is inviting community members, families, schools, service clubs, teams, workplaces, and local organizations to come together for the 2nd Annual Steps for Safety Walk on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Dorian Parker Centre in Sunnidale Park, 227 Sunnidale Road, Barrie.

The family-friendly event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and aims to raise $40,000 in support of local anti-human trafficking initiatives that protect and support vulnerable children and youth across Simcoe County and Muskoka.

For those not located in Barrie, we still encourage you to fundraise, create a team and walk together. Contact us if you have any questions or need any material.

This year, Family Connexions is working toward a goal of 40 teams and 250 participants, bringing together individuals, families, workplaces, schools, and community groups to raise awareness and critical funds for local youth.

Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada and often targets vulnerable youth as young as 13 years old. Funds raised through Steps for Safety help support prevention, intervention, education, and recovery initiatives that work to keep local children and youth safe while providing hope and support for those impacted by trafficking.

"Steps for Safety is about more than a walk - it's about bringing our community together to protect and support vulnerable children and youth," says Candace Gordon, Fund Development and Engagement Coordinator at Family Connexions. "Every team that registers, every participant who fundraises, and every sponsor who gets involved helps strengthen local programs that make a real difference in the lives of young people. We invite families, friends, coworkers, schools, and community groups to join us for a meaningful and fun-filled day while supporting an important cause close to home."

Participants will enjoy a 2.5km or 5km scenic walk through Sunnidale Park, supported rest stops, food and beverages, community booths, games, activities, entertainment, and family-friendly fun throughout the day.

Participants will receive an exclusive Steps for Safety event t-shirt and other fun swag items on site.

Businesses and organizations are encouraged to participate through sponsorship opportunities, team registrations, and event-day engagement. Sponsorship opportunities are available until July 31, 2026.
