Description
Business Education
With many local employers stating that they are having a difficult time finding skilled workers to fill jobs and projections for that shortage to continue, the lack of affordable housing is becoming a considerable barrier to attracting new talent to the area.
The province’s rental vacancy rates are at their lowest since 2000 (1.6% in Ontario and just 2.7% in Barrie), and the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) is deeply concerned about the province’s ability to meet increasing demand, especially in light of Ontario’s new housing policies. In September, FRPO released an Urbanation study which found Ontario’s rental housing supply will continue to diminish unless at least 6,250 additional new rental units are built each year for the next decade.
FRPO’s Director of Certification, Ted Whitehead will be speaking at our March Chamber Business Breakfast about FRPO’s proposed solutions, their ongoing #rentON campaign advocating for more rental supply, and how they are working to raise public awareness of the issue.
The City of Barrie has made great strides towards achieving their Affordable Housing Strategy goals; in only 3 years they have already created more than 50 per cent of the identified 840-unit objective. During the breakfast, Planning and Building Services Director Andrea Bourrie will give us an overview of the long-term strategy and a brief update on progress.
Join us to learn how you and your business can get involved in finding a solution to this issue.
